Arts Central's Stage to Screen


Find out all about the adaptation, casting, acting and production
process by the crew and cast in talks presented by Objectifs.

For the first time on Singapore television, eight Singapore plays come
alive in one series with Singapore's brightest talents.
From stage to the small screen, these stories are adapted from some of
Singapore's most prolific playwrights and directed by upcoming film
directors.

February 17

Machine (debuts on Arts Central on February 6)

7pm - 745pm: Screening of Machine
8pm - 9pm: Talk and Q&A by director Sun Koh

Written and Directed by award-winning short film director, Sun Koh

Sun has directed many different forms of film - from short films to TV
programmes, including the HD Tele-feature Love Poetry and Running with
Scissors (Blue Print series). Her mutiple award-winning short film, The
Secret Heaven, received the award for Best Director in the 15th
Singapore International Film Festival. Her direction is very distinct as she
never fails to portray the state of the human condition in the story
world.

Adapted from Tan Tarn How's award-winning play, Machine

Tan Tarn How has written five full-length plays and was Head Writer of
the television series Growing Up. He is working for Singapore Press
Holdings as a journalist. He is also the Associate Artistic Director
(Singapore Wing) of Theatreworks.


March 10

Early Morning Awakening (debuts on Arts Central on February 27)

8pm - 9pm: Talk and Q&A by Gözde and Russel Zehnder

Written and Directed by short film directors Gözde and Russel Zehnder

Gözde graduated with the Best Foreign Graduate Photography Student Award and Consistent Good Work Award for 'Film & Video' from Edith Cowan University. Her short film The Living Wall (adaptation of a Turkish short story) won prestigious awards for Best Experimental Film and Best Editing in 12th WA Screen Awards in Australia (1998) and at The Substation (2002).

Russel showcased his first slide installation entitled Memaories, Dreams & Reflections for Project Innocence, a collaboration of 3 young artists at 2 different places. He had his first solo black and white photo exhibition, a visual diary of his travels around Turkey, at the Photographic Society of Singapore in April 2003. Their short film Happy Birthday Sharon received the Audience Voice Award at 2nd Singapore Shorts Film Festival at The Substation in 2002, while their latest short, The Love
Thieves, was the Official Selection for International Competition at Montecatini International Short Film Festival in July 2004.

Adapted from award winning playwright Haresh Sharma's Off Centre

Sharma has been Resident Playwright of The Necessary Stage since 1990. To date, he has written more than 40 short and full-length plays which have been staged in Singapore, Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Cairo, Melbourne, Busan, Seoul, New Delhi and Dublin.
